Utilities & Public Works

Lake Mills has excellent municipal utility services for all its residential, business, and industrial users. All city streets are paved, including curbs and gutters.





The total tax Levy for property in the City is $32.76087. This is for Fiscal Year July 1,2015 thru June 30, 2016.



  • Lake Mills is served by its own municipal power system with interconnection with Dairyland Power of LaCrosse, WI.

  • Generation capacity of municipal system is 18,400 KW with diesel and natural gas engines and 69,000 KW interconnection capability with Dairyland Power

  • Present peak load is 7,000 KW



  • The LM municipal water works has two wells supplying water from the Maquoketa creviced limestone formation 450 ' under the service

  • The two wells have a total pumping capacity of 1,400 gallons per minute

  • Water is stored in two overhead towers with a capacity of 750,000 gallons and an underground storage tank with a 150,000 gallon capacity

  • Two treatment plants provide iron removal and chlorination



  • Lake Mills sanitation department operates a 22-acre aerated pond with a storage capacity of 28,700,000 gallons

  • Organic load capacity of wastewater plant – 3,000 BOD. Average in 2015 was 405 lbs per day

  • Hydraulic design of wastewater plant – 750,000 gallons per day

  • In 2015, the average load was 321,000 gallons per day



  • Natural gas is supplied by Black Hills Energy. Gas is available to all the Lake Mills industrial areas as well as the City's residential users



  • Communication services are provided by member-owned Winnebago Cooperative Telecom Association (WCTA)

  • State of the art digital communication switching center and fiber optics-wireline and wireless voice communications

  • Broadband internet access

  • Digital Entertainment Television Service

      Water Availablility Charge: $2.63 per month will be the charge to all locations where City water is available.

      Sewer Availability Charge: $2.56 per month will be the charge to all locations where City sewer is available.

Water Surcharge
In addition to the water rates listed above, effective September 16, 2004,  there is a monthly surcharge as follows:


Residential, Commercial and Governmental Customers: $2.60 per service per month
