July Jubilee is scheduled for Friday, July 13, through Sunday, July 15, this summer and planning is in full force. As some may have read in the paper last week, our committee is trying to move evening activities onto Main Street this year! If you are a Main Street business or building owner, you have probably received an email from me discussing our vision for this years festivities, but here is a recap of what we are trying to establish:
In an effort to shake things up, we would like to hold a "Taste of Lake Mills" event Friday, July 13, where we close down part of the 200 block of Main Street to traffic, allowing attendees to freely peruse downtown businesses and entertainment.
With permission from the City Council and Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division we would allow restaurants and entertainment establishments to sell drinks to carry out onto the street (beer and wine). We would also invite local vendors and entertainment to participate by being set up in areas downtown. To promote a community environment, a variety of attractions and activities for families and people of all ages would be provided. Such attractions could include things like games, crafts, shopping, performances and contests - creating a festival type atmosphere.
We also hope to promote downtown businesses during a weekend where Lake Mills significantly increases in population. We would love to set up a "sample" festival where purchased tickets get attendees to sample dishes and specialties from our local restaurants and vendors.
Saturday, July 14, would be the traditional street dance on Main Street, where adjoining restaurants and bars will again be allowed to sell food and drinks (beer and wine) to carry out onto the street. We are also excited to announce that Boogie & the Yo-yoz will be returning for another July Jubilee this summer - hopefully on Main Street!
Not all details are concrete, as many areas still need some brainstorming. We would love to hear your input. If you would like to give your feedback or get involved, please contact Cassie Johnson at firstname.lastname@example.org or (641) 592-5253.
