Uptown Fitness, New Member Feature
Please help us in welcoming Uptown Fitness to the chamber! Uptown Fitness, which grew out of the Jazzercise franchise owned by Heather Yeoman and started in Lake Mills 10 years ago in 2007, set up shop on Main Street in March of this year. The fitness facility boasts 4 instructors and a continuingly growing class list, including Jazzercise, yoga and indoor cycling.
Owner, Heather Yeoman, is a 200-hour registered yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance.
“Yoga has been a wonderful addition to my fitness routine as it balances out all of that crazy energy and keeps me flexible and focused. Yoga and Jazzercise together help me keep up with my busy family and my full-time job as a professor at Waldorf University,” said Heather.
Rachel Olson, owner of the Jazzercise portion of the business, is also working on her yoga certification alongside colleague Anita Peters. Certified Jazzercise instructors include Heather (DanceMixx); Rachel (Core); Anita, (Fusion); Missy Wacha, (Strength30 and Interval Fusion); and Hallie Erdahl, (DanceMixx).
As captain of her high school dance team and color guard, and a member of her college dance team, Heather always loved to dance and be active. After college, she learned there weren’t as many opportunities to remain active, so when a friend invited her to Jazzercise for the first time she jumped on it. After that first class she was instantly hooked and so began her entrepreneurship journey.
“I loved the energy, the popular music and the dancing, not to mention the great workout! I’ve been instructing now for 11 years and still love every single class,” said Heather.
Even though dance fitness has been very popular with Uptown Fitness’ former customer base, they decided to branch out into other forms of exercise when transitioning into their new business model.
“Our newest addition, indoor cycling, includes certified instructors Anita Peters, Rachel Olson and Missy Wacha. These classes have been very popular for men and women and are a lot of fun,” said Heather.
Uptown Fitness’ mission statement reflects the owners’ attitude towards th
eir business and its purpose in the community: Uptown Fitness in Lake Mills promotes lifelong health and wellness to everyone in our community through exercise, yoga, education and supportive relationships.
“[I’m] humbled to watch people come together for fitness and support every single day, and I am happy that Jazzercise provided the initial space for that,” said Heather. “It’s hard for me to believe that we have grown to this point now with 5 instructors and growing classes. I am lucky to be a part of that.”
Heather said the biggest benefit of having a business in a small town, like Lake Mills, is the way people come together to help you succeed and they are excited to collaborate further with downtown businesses.
“Our customers helped us move and clean our old studio, the chamber helped us apply for a small business loan, Lory Groe at Farmer’s Trust helped us organize and plan our financials. Dave Brekken built our stage and cubbies, and Leon Christianson put in our flooring. Groe Electric and Young’s Plumbing were involved in our renovation, and we ordered pizza from Main Street Pizza during our late night work sessions. We purchased gift certificates from ‘The Mills’ Theater, Teluwut and Main Attractions to thank our volunteers. A bottle of Bottle Barn champagne was popped in celebration at our opening and we decorated with floral arrangements from Three Oaks Greenhouse. Pit Stop Printing made shirts and window signs, and there were many trips to Dollar General and David’s grocery..I could go on!”
As an entrepreneur, Heather enjoys the community and people she gets to work with.
“We have such a wonderful family at our studio - some of whom have been with me the entire 10 years,” said Heather. “Newcomers are always welcomed warmly and usually comment on the positive energy in our studio. People come for the great workouts, but they also receive the bonus of a supportive environment, lots of laughs and positive energy. I’ve seen countless new friendships form over the years!”
